Many people are still unaware of vaginismus, or don’t fully understand it, and may not realise they are experiencing it.
What is Vaginismus?
Vaginismus is a condition where the muscles around the vagina contract involuntarily, especially during intimacy, gynaecological examinations, or the use of tampons.
Why Don’t Many Women Realise They Have Vaginismus?
This is one of the most important questions. Many women actually experience symptoms but don’t realise it, because:
- It’s assumed to be “just a bit of normal pain”
- There’s limited awareness about sexual health
- They feel embarrassed to talk about it
- It’s misinterpreted as purely an emotional issue
Symptoms of Vaginismus
- Pelvic muscles tightening uncontrollably
- Tension or fear before gynaecological treatment
- Difficulty with or fear of intimacy
- A physical response to pain
If these symptoms occur repeatedly, they are not something to be ignored.
So, vaginismus is something that deserves attention, especially among women.
What may be considered normal during intimacy could actually be one of the symptoms of vaginismus. Get an examination and advice from a specialist promptly for suitable treatment.
