Have you ever had just one person at home come down with a fever, only for other family members to start coughing, catching a cold, and feeling unwell a few days later?
This situation can be called the ‘Chain Effect’, or chain infection. It means an influenza infection starts with one individual and then spreads to others around them.
How Does the Chain Effect Happen?
1. Respiratory droplets
The virus can spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks at close range. The virus spreads quickly into the air.
2. Direct & indirect contact
The virus can also transfer through contact with contaminated surfaces or objects, when a person then touches their face, nose, or mouth.
3. Crowded places
The virus spreads faster in crowded areas because it easily passes from one individual to another.
That’s why an influenza virus can start with just one person and eventually cause an entire household to fall ill.
Why Does Influenza Spread Easily Within a Family?
The home is a place where we share space, including eating together, touching the same surfaces, and taking fewer preventive measures such as washing hands or covering the mouth when coughing or sneezing.
Because of this, the virus spreads easily from one family member to all the others, especially those at higher risk, such as children, the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses.
