Colorectal Cancer: The Silent Killer Many People Don’t Realise

Did You Know?

Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in Malaysia, particularly among men. According to the latest Malaysia National Cancer Registry Report, colorectal cancer remains the most common cancer among Malaysian men.

However, many cases are only detected at a later stage, which can make treatment more challenging.

What Is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer, also known as bowel cancer, develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably in the colon or rectum.

Many colorectal cancers begin as small growths called polyps. Some polyps may gradually develop into cancer over time if they are not detected and treated.

Who Is at Higher Risk?

You may have a higher risk of colorectal cancer if you:

● Are older, particularly from middle age onwards
● Have a family history of colorectal cancer
● Experience persistent changes in bowel habits
● Frequently consume a diet high in processed or red meat and low in fibre
● Have a sedentary lifestyle
● Smoke
● Consume alcohol regularly

Early Symptoms That Should Not Be Ignored

Possible symptoms of colorectal cancer may include:

❗ Bleeding during bowel movements
❗ Blood in the stool or unusually dark stools
❗ Persistent constipation or diarrhoea
❗ Abdominal pain, bloating, or a feeling of incomplete bowel emptying
❗ Unexplained weight loss
❗ Unusual or persistent tiredness

The challenge is that some people may mistake these signs for common digestive problems. Colorectal cancer may also cause few or no symptoms in its early stages.

Colorectal Cancer in Malaysia

According to Malaysia’s latest National Cancer Registry data:

Colorectal cancer is the most common cancer among Malaysian men.
● A significant proportion of cancers in Malaysia are still diagnosed at Stage 3 or Stage 4, highlighting the importance of earlier detection.
● Earlier diagnosis generally provides more treatment options and is associated with better outcomes.

When Should You Consider Screening?

You should discuss colorectal cancer screening with a healthcare professional if:

✔️ You are within the recommended screening age group
✔️ You experience persistent symptoms such as those listed above
✔️ You have a family history of colorectal cancer
✔️ You have other risk factors or concerns about your bowel health

Screening recommendations may vary depending on age, symptoms, family history, and individual medical risk.
