Stomach pain can occur due to various factors, including digestive problems, infections, or disorders of the internal organs. If it recurs frequently and persists, a doctor’s examination may be needed to identify the underlying cause.

What Is an Abdominal Ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound is an examination that uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the organs within the abdominal area. This examination does not use ionising radiation and is usually performed by applying gel to the skin before the scanner is moved across the abdomen.

Among the abdominal ultrasounds that can be performed:

  • Liver
  • Gallbladder and bile ducts
  • Kidneys
  • Pancreas
  • Spleen
  • Major blood vessels within the abdomen
When Might an Abdominal Scan Be Considered?
  • Frequent or persistent stomach pain
  • Pain in the upper right area of the abdomen
  • Continuous bloating or abdominal swelling
  • Back pain or suspected kidney stones
  • Frequent nausea and vomiting
  • Abnormal liver or kidney test results
  • Changes in skin colour or yellowing of the eyes
