CPR stands for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation. It is an emergency lifesaving technique used when someone becomes unresponsive and is not breathing normally, especially during cardiac arrest.
CPR helps keep blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs while waiting for emergency medical help to arrive.
How Does CPR Work?
CPR mainly involves chest compressions. These compressions help move blood around the body when the heart is no longer pumping effectively.
For adults, chest compressions are usually given in the centre of the chest at a rate of around 100–120 compressions per minute.
When Is CPR Needed?
CPR may be needed when a person:
Suddenly collapses
Is unresponsive
Is not breathing normally
Shows signs of cardiac arrest
If this happens, call emergency medical services immediately and begin CPR if you are trained or able to do so.
What About an AED?
An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a device that checks the heart rhythm and can deliver a shock when necessary.
Using CPR together with an AED can be an important part of emergency response while waiting for medical professionals.
Why Should You Learn CPR?
Emergencies can happen anywhere especially at home, at work, or in public.
Learning CPR can help you:
Respond more quickly
Stay calmer during an emergency
Help someone before medical assistance arrives
Be better prepared to protect your family and community
