Hari Raya is one of the most anticipated times for gathering with family and enjoying a variety of traditional dishes such as ketupat, rendang, and kuih-muih. However, food intake also needs to be managed so it doesn’t affect our health, including weight gain, digestive problems, and a rise in blood sugar levels.
That’s why it’s important for us to know how to manage our eating so we can enjoy the food without harming our health.
1. Eat in Moderate Portions
You don’t have to turn down your host’s invitation, but you can eat in smaller amounts to taste the food that’s served. For example, one ketupat and half a ladle of peanut sauce — low in calories, and your stomach stays comfortable.
2. Limit Your Intake of Raya Cookies
Raya cookies usually contain high amounts of sugar and fat. If eaten in excess, they can cause weight gain and raise your blood sugar too.
3. Prioritise Plain Water
Sweet drinks such as rose syrup and carbonated drinks are often the choice during Hari Raya, but plain water can help keep our body hydrated and control our appetite.
4. Stay Physically Active
Even when you’re busy celebrating, staying active is important to burn off the excess calories consumed during Raya. For example, going for a walk or doing light exercise.
So, although Hari Raya is a time to enjoy food with family and friends, food intake should still be managed so it doesn’t affect your health.
