Safe Blood Sugar Management While Fasting

The month of Ramadan is one that Muslims eagerly anticipate. However, diabetic patients or those with unstable blood sugar problems require more careful planning and monitoring.

Who Needs to Be Careful?

These groups should seek a doctor’s advice before fasting:

  • Type 1 diabetes patients
  • Type 2 diabetes patients who take insulin
  • Pregnant women with diabetes
  • The elderly with chronic illnesses

These groups are strongly encouraged to get an early examination with a doctor.

When Is the Best Time to Check Blood Sugar?

A blood sugar test using a glucometer does NOT break your fast, so suitable times are:

  • Before sahur
  • Midday (if you feel weak or dizzy)
  • Before iftar
  • 2 hours after iftar

Don’t change your dosage or the timing of your medication without discussing it with your doctor. Some medications need their timing adjusted during Ramadan.

If you have diabetes or unstable blood sugar readings, get a health check-up promptly before Ramadan begins.
